Tyrannosaurus

Aside from the wheels and cam, T Rex is made from one piece of flame maple, with different approaches to the sawing. The body is from flat sawn, and the legs and arms are from quarter sawn sections.

The flame maple blank was roasted in an oven around 350 degrees, made specially for the process, operating in a vacuum. The sugars are baked out of the wood, and it becomes very stable.

The wheels are made from birdseye maple, some scrap I had laying about the shop.

The front arms are posable, as they pivot on their pegs. The lower legs move with the rotation of the wheels, which have a cam on their axle.

There’s a pushrod that runs through the body as shown in the photo above, driving the head up and down as the wheels rotate the cam. The head pivots on the “eye pegs” that driven into each side of the head.

Finish sanded to 220 grit, and oiled with Tung oil, two coats. He’s ready to rumble.

Animations will be uploaded to YouTube and linked here when they are ready. More professional quality photography needs to be done as well.
